Buying a Volga

When You are looking for a Volga there are a few things to give extra attention. Volga's are very strong cars with simple and robust technique. Despite most Volga's are after 30 or 40 years of service complete worn out. Also rust is not unknown to a Volga. A real problem is the fact to most Volga were kept on the road to all costs. Meaning that a Volga always runs but due to repairs with just anything the owner could find at that moment. Spare parts from many different origin were used to fix the cars. Many repairs were done by people who know just as much about cars as your mother in law does. So look out for bad repairs with none original Volga parts. Working on a Volga will be more difficult if the car has all kinds of strange parts on it.


I sorted a few points of attention
1. Steering Worn or wrongly adjusted.
Various parts worn out (mostly due to less grease) 
2. Breaks Worn out cylinders (rubbers always broken).
Leaking main cylinder (combined with clutch control).

Rust on break tubes (original tubes are made of steal).
3. Semi-elliptic springs Broken or just "tired".
4. Petrol engine Capable of high mileage (300.000km without major repairs). Many engines have done more than this. So watch out for oil using (blue smoke) and low oil pressure. All Volga's are equipped with oil pressure gauge. After the engine is on normal working temperature the oil pressure must be a least 0,5 bar at 900-1000 rpm. All petrol engine suffer from oil leaks at the rear end of the engine, the rest should be dry.
5. Clutch Main bearing worn out, it needs regularly a bit of grease. 
6. Gearbox Bad shifting due to worn or bad adjustment.
Broken first gear.

Leaking at the rear end (look at the handbrake drum) and at shifting controls.
7. Miscellaneous Interior, broken illumination.
Broken electric regulator.
